Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has stated that the people will determine his successor in the 2027 governorship election. He made the declaration during a high-level stakeholders' meeting at the Government House in Yola, where he dismissed speculation that he plans to endorse a specific candidate. Fintiri stressed that he remains neutral in the emerging political contest and affirmed that no individual would be imposed on the electorate. "The power to choose leaders rests with the people. No one will decide for them," he said. He urged all aspirants to go back to the grassroots and earn support through direct engagement with voters. "Democratic leadership cannot be imposed but must be freely given by the citizens," Fintiri added. He assured party members and aspiring candidates of a fair political process. While he previously indicated that only a grassroots politician would be acceptable as his successor, recent speculation has linked him to support for Senator Aminu Iya Abbas, the former Speaker representing the Central Zone.
Governor Fintiri's insistence on neutrality rings hollow given his past signals about preferring a grassroots candidate, yet he continues to benefit from a political environment where influence flows through informal channels. His refusal to endorse anyone publicly does not erase the weight his past statements carry in Adamawa's political circles. Senator Aminu Iya Abbas, despite not being officially backed, still appears positioned as the de facto favourite. For ordinary voters, this performance underscores how little room exists for true competition when power is said to rest with the people but shaped by quiet endorsements.
