Two scavengers were arrested in the early hours of Sunday in the Pegi community of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory. The incident occurred around 5:47 am, when the suspects allegedly targeted a house under construction. Zayyanu Ibrahim and Awwalu Usman, the two arrested scavengers, allegedly stole two pieces of iron rods from the building while the security guard was away observing Subhi prayers.
The security guard spotted the suspects upon his return and raised an alarm, prompting vigilantes to apprehend them as they attempted to escape. Local youths, hearing of the arrest, reportedly attempted to seize the suspects but were thwarted by the vigilantes. One of the suspects was allegedly linked to previous thefts of valuables from other uncompleted houses in the community.
The arrested suspects were handed over to the police and will be transferred to the FCT Police Command after investigation.
The brazen theft of iron rods from a house under construction in Pegi community highlights the growing concern of property insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory. The vigilantes' swift action in apprehending the suspects is commendable, but it also raises questions about the adequacy of security measures in the area. The fact that local youths attempted to take the law into their own hands is a worrying trend that authorities must address. The suspects will face justice, but the real issue is the lack of effective security that allows such crimes to occur. The FCT Police Command must ensure that the investigation is thorough and that the suspects are brought to book.
