The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced that zoning arrangement will be the guiding framework for its National Convention scheduled for March 29 and 30 in Abuja. The party made this statement in a communique issued after its 107th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Monday.
The NEC reaffirmed the party's readiness for the convention, which has the theme "A Convention of Inclusiveness, Unity and Renewal". The party directed all relevant organs and committees to ensure seamless coordination for a successful, credible, and transparent exercise. The zoning formula for national elective positions was also reaffirmed, in line with the party's principles of equity, fairness, inclusiveness, and national balance.
The sale of nomination forms for the convention has commenced, and the party advised interested aspirants to comply with the approved guidelines and timelines. The NEC reiterated the supremacy of the party and called on all members to remain united, disciplined, and committed to the collective interest of the party.
The party expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the Ward, Local Government Area, State, and Zonal Congresses across the country and ratified the reports of the congresses. It commended the party leaders, electoral committees, stakeholders, and members for their commitment, discipline, and adherence to due process.
The PDP's decision to stick to zoning arrangement for its National Convention is a clear indication of its commitment to equity and fairness. However, the party's readiness to provide purposeful leadership and national direction remains to be seen. The ongoing electronic registration of members is a step in the right direction, but the party must ensure that it is transparent and inclusive. The PDP's renewed strength and organisational capacity are a welcome development, but it must translate into tangible benefits for Nigerians.
