Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has dismissed speculations about a possible defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, reiterating his commitment to the party. The governor made this declaration while addressing PDP stakeholders from all 33 Local Government Areas of the state at the Local Government House Secretariat in Ibadan, the state capital, on Monday. This comes on the heels of a meeting between Makinde and Rabiu Kwankwaso, the national leader of the New Nigeria People's Party, in Kano State, where they were joined by former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and former Bayelsa State governor, Senator Seriaike Dickson.
Makinde's statement of intent was clear: the PDP will not collapse and will actively participate in the 2027 general elections. He assured party members that despite current challenges, the party remains relevant and will produce candidates for all elective positions from the state to the national level. The governor also urged stakeholders to adopt consensus-building strategies ahead of the elections, directing party leaders across zones to convene meetings aimed at resolving differences and agreeing on acceptable arrangements.
Makinde announced automatic tickets for National Assembly members and first-term members of the state House of Assembly, clarifying that first-term lawmakers would be granted automatic tickets, while considerations would also be made for returning members based on existing agreements. The governor's message was one of determination and confidence in the party's ability to win the 2027 elections.
Governor Seyi Makinde's unwavering commitment to the Peoples Democratic Party is a welcome relief to party loyalists in Oyo State. However, the question remains: what concrete steps will the party take to address its internal challenges and ensure a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections? The automatic tickets granted to National Assembly members and first-term lawmakers are a positive move, but it remains to be seen how this will impact the party's overall strategy. As Makinde himself noted, success is achieved through struggle, and the PDP will need to put in the hard work to win the 2027 elections. With the governor's leadership and the party's determination, there is hope for a better future for democracy in Oyo State.
