Yelwata attack: Court admits AK-47 in evidence in suspected terrorists’ trial
**Yelwata Attack: Court Admits AK-47 Rifle in Evidence Against Suspected Terrorists**
In Abuja, a Federal High Court has accepted an AK-47 rifle as evidence in the trial of nine suspected terrorists accused of involvement in the deadly June 2025 attack on Yelwata village in Benue state.
The court, presided over by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, admitted the rifle as part of the evidence against the defendants after it was tendered by the prosecution's first witness, Moses Paul, a senior officer from the Nigeria Police Force's Intelligence Response Unit.
According to Paul, the rifle was recovered from one of the defendants, Ardo Muhammadu Saidu. Notably, the witness mentioned that the rifle had naira notes placed between its magazines, a practice some people believe would make the weapon function properly. This unusual detail has sparked curiosity about the possible reasons behind this practice.
In addition to the AK-47 rifle, the prosecution also submitted a ballistic report that showed the rifle was recently used and remained active. The report was tendered as evidence and accepted by the court.
The nine defendants, who were arraigned on February 3, are facing a 57-count charge related to their alleged involvement in the Yelwata attack, which resulted in the loss of over 150 lives and multiple injuries.
The attack, which occurred on June 13, 2025, has been linked to prior meetings held in Nasarawa State by the alleged perpetrators, who were armed with rifles. Investigation by the police revealed that the attack was a response to the anti-grazing law introduced by the Benue State government.
The trial continues, with the prosecution presenting evidence to prove the defendants' complicity in the Yelwata attack.
