Transcorp Group has deepened its commitment to empowering young entrepreneurs across Nigeria, particularly in the Niger Delta region. The company has pledged $2 million to support 1,250 beneficiaries of the Tony Elumelu Foundation's Entrepreneurship Programme. Each of these entrepreneurs will receive $5,000 in seed funding to establish and grow their businesses.
The partnership between Transcorp Group and the Tony Elumelu Foundation has been instrumental in fostering entrepreneurship in Africa. According to Tony Elumelu, empowering entrepreneurs is a key path to economic transformation. He notes that Africans who create businesses, generate jobs, and solve the continent's challenges will build its future.
Transcorp Group's investment in the programme underscores its commitment to host communities, particularly in Delta State. The company's power subsidiary operates in Ughelli, and it has prioritised supporting entrepreneurs in the Niger Delta region. Over 430 of the total beneficiaries are from Niger Delta states, with 254 of them hailing from Delta State alone.
Transcorp Group's commitment to empowering young entrepreneurs is a welcome development, particularly in the Niger Delta region. The company's investment of $2 million will go a long way in supporting the growth of businesses in the region. However, it is essential that the company follows through on its promise to prioritise host communities. The fact that over 430 beneficiaries are from Niger Delta states is a testament to the company's efforts, but more needs to be done to address the socio-economic challenges in the region. Transcorp Group's purpose-driven corporate organisation should translate into tangible benefits for the people of the Niger Delta.
