A fire tore through the Popo section of Yaba Market in Lagos in the early hours of Saturday, destroying multiple shops and goods. The incident, which began around 3 a.m., triggered panic among traders and residents, with videos on social media showing flames and thick smoke engulfing the area. Eyewitness Lugar Feliz, livestreaming on TikTok, confirmed firefighters were on site, while Olamilekan Iyiola (@Olamilekan0932) described it as a "terrible fire outbreak in Yaba right now." Trader Adeoluwa (@Okunlola_Jude) said shops behind his property were fully destroyed, with losses running into billions of naira. He criticised the emergency response, noting the fire service headquarters is just 10 minutes away but only one truck arrived initially. Sullex Print and Branding (@SullexBranding) reported that three fire trucks responded, but only one had water, as the blaze spread to Ajibode Street. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has not issued an official statement on the damage or casualties. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
The fact that only one of three fire trucks had water exposes a dangerous gap between emergency infrastructure on paper and reality. When traders in Yaba lose billions in a single night and cite the proximity of headquarters, it reveals a system failing at execution, not just resources. Lagos cannot keep relying on social media livestreams to document its emergencies while response units arrive under-equipped. This incident does not change policy — but it does show how little protection small businesses actually have.
