The Senate has ordered the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to investigate a recent killing in Anguwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, where at least 28 people lost their lives.
The Senate has also directed a high-powered delegation, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, to visit the affected communities to offer condolences to the victims and the people of Plateau State.
Senator Diket Plang, who moved the motion, expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in Kanam and Jos North Local Government Areas.
Plateau State, once known as the Home of Peace and Tourism, has experienced a resurgence of violence after years of relative calm, according to Senator Plang.
The attacks, which included a deadly assault in Anguwan Rukuba on March 29, 2026, appeared to be coordinated and deliberately targeted civilians in densely populated areas, raising fears of escalating insecurity.
The Senate expressed concern over the increasingly complex nature of the crisis, noting its economic, ethnic, and religious dimensions. They warned that the persistent violence is displacing communities, disrupting agricultural activities, and posing a threat to food security.
The Senate urged security agencies to adopt more proactive measures, including establishing permanent operational bases in volatile areas and intensifying intelligence and aerial surveillance to locate and dismantle criminal hideouts.
The Senate's call for a full investigation into the Plateau killings is a clear indication that the institution is taking the deteriorating security situation in the state seriously, particularly under the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
