PDP risks losing out in 2027 – Sule Lamido
Former governor of Jigawa State, Malam Sule Lamido, has expressed concern over the current state of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Lamido, a founding member of the party, regrets that those who do not know how the party was established are now claiming ownership. He warns that the current division within the party could lead to its downfall in 2027 if not addressed. Lamido's comments come as the party prepares for a national convention backed by the Nyesom Wike-led faction.
Lamido stresses that the PDP was founded in 1998 by Nigerian leaders and thinkers who knew the country's history and culture. He lists notable figures such as Adamu Chiroma, Alex Ekwueme, and Solomon Lar as among those who fought for democracy during the Abacha regime. Lamido emphasizes that the party's strength lies in its ability to bring together diverse ideologies and philosophies, making it a broad-based party that represents Nigerian interests.
Lamido's comments are a clear warning to party leaders to unite and avoid division, which he believes could lead to the party's loss in the 2027 elections.
Malam Sule Lamido's words of caution to the PDP leadership are timely and poignant. The party's internal divisions, fueled by personal interests and ambitions, threaten to undermine its very foundation. As Lamido notes, the PDP was founded by Nigerian leaders who fought for democracy and knew the country's history and culture. It is this sense of shared purpose and identity that has made the party a force to be reckoned with in Nigerian politics. However, the current infighting and factionalism risk eroding this sense of shared purpose, making it imperative for party leaders to put aside their differences and work towards a common goal. The fate of the PDP in 2027 hangs in the balance, and it is up to the party's leaders to ensure that they do not squander the opportunities that lie before them.
