Makinde's N1.5 Billion Disbursement to 1,000 Youths Boosts Agribusiness Development
A significant milestone was achieved in Oyo State as Governor Seyi Makinde disbursed a total of N1.5 billion to 1,000 youths under the Youth Entrepreneurship in Agribusiness Project (YEAP). This initiative, part of the Sustainable Actions for Economic Recovery (SAfER) programme, aims to promote agribusiness development and youth empowerment. The beneficiaries, who were trained in 2021 at CSS Global Integrated Farms, received N1.5 million each through a partnership involving the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA), First City Monument Bank, and the Mastercard Foundation.
The governor's move is part of a broader strategy to build sustainable economic systems in the state. Speaking at the disbursement ceremony, Makinde emphasized that the programme goes beyond financial assistance, focusing on creating a deliberate structure for sustainable development. The YEAP initiative aligns with the state's policy shift from the Roadmap for Accelerated Development (2019-2023) to the Roadmap for Sustainable Development (2023-2027).
In response to prevailing economic challenges, Makinde also announced a N10,000 monthly transportation allowance for state and local government workers. This measure, which takes effect from April, will run for an initial period of three months to cushion the impact of rising fuel costs.
The next step is for the beneficiaries to utilise the funds responsibly, as the support is an interest-free loan provided without collateral. The state government expects discipline, accountability, and results from the youths who have received the support.
The recent move by Governor Seyi Makinde to disburse N1.5 billion to 1,000 youths under the YEAP initiative is a commendable step towards promoting agribusiness development and youth empowerment in Oyo State. By providing both technical knowledge and financial backing, the programme aims to transition participants from training to enterprise.
