Pam Bondi has left her position as Attorney General, with President Donald Trump confirming the move on Truth Social on Thursday afternoon. She will be replaced on an acting basis by Todd Blanche, a former lawyer who represented Trump in his New York criminal trial that ended in conviction. According to sources close to the administration, Trump had been considering the change for some time, frustrated that the Justice Department was not moving quickly enough to pursue cases against his political opponents.
In a statement posted on X, Bondi said she would spend the next month transitioning duties to Blanche before taking up a private sector role she described as "important" and one where she would continue supporting Trump and his administration. She highlighted major accomplishments during her tenure, including a drop in the murder rate to its lowest level since 1900, the first terrorism convictions of Antifa members, the dismantling of numerous gangs, the arrest of over 90 cartel leaders, and 24 Supreme Court wins.
Bondi's time in office was not without controversy. The delayed and incomplete release of the Epstein files drew sharp criticism, including from White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, who told Vanity Fair that Bondi delivered "binders full of nothingness" and claimed a witness list existed when it did not. Bondi also faced backlash after a heated appearance before the House Judiciary Committee in February, where she refused to answer questions about the Epstein matter. Despite Trump's public praise, calling her a "Great American Patriot," her removal suggests loyalty alone was not enough to sustain her role.
Trump didn't fire Pam Bondi for failing the country — he fired her for not weaponising the Justice Department against his enemies. Her record of low murders and cartel arrests mattered less than her refusal to speed up prosecutions of political foes. That Todd Blanche, a personal lawyer with battlefield experience in Trump's legal wars, takes over tells Nigerians this was never about justice, but control. When loyalty is the top job requirement, the law becomes just another political tool.
