Umma El-Rufai, mother of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, died at over 90 years old shortly after her son's arrest on money-laundering charges. Kenneth Okonkwo, a member of the African Democratic Congress and former Labour Party member, attributed her death to trauma caused by the detention of her son. In a video interview with Symfoni News, Okonkwo said elderly mothers are highly emotional and suggested that misinformation about Nasir El-Rufai's condition could have led to a fatal shock. He alleged that some may have wrongly told her that her son had died in custody. Nasir El-Rufai was arraigned in March at the Kaduna Division of the Federal High Court on 10 counts of corruption. He was initially denied release but allowed out on March 27 to attend his mother's burial without a court order, a move Okonkwo criticised as evidence of judicial manipulation. Okonkwo accused the All Progressives Congress of exploiting the judiciary for political ends.

That Nasir El-Rufai was released without a court order only after his mother's death undermines claims of judicial independence. The timing exposes a pattern where state actions align too neatly with political narratives. For Nigerians, this suggests that even court processes can bend when political pressure mounts. The judiciary's credibility is further strained when exceptions appear reserved for the connected.
