The Oyo State Police Command has arrested Muhammadu Abubakar, a suspected kidnapper linked to a series of abductions in the Ogbomoso–Ikoyi-Ile area. Acting on a tip from a community member, police and security operatives launched an operation in the Ikoyi-Ile forest and farmland, where three armed men were reportedly seen with an AK-47 rifle. The joint team, led by the Divisional Police Officer of Ikoyi-Ile Division, conducted a search and apprehended Abubakar, recovering an AK-47 rifle with breach number 6628/2274, six rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, and three live cartridges.
During questioning, Abubakar confessed to multiple kidnappings and is now assisting investigators. He has been on the police radar for involvement in cross-border criminal activities. The suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further interrogation. A manhunt is underway to capture the two other suspects. Police Public Relations Officer Ayanlade Olayinka credited public cooperation for the breakthrough, urging residents to keep sharing credible information. The command reaffirmed its commitment to curbing violent crime across Oyo State.
Muhammadu Abubakar's arrest shows that intelligence from citizens can disrupt active kidnapping rings. His possession of an AK-47 and links to cross-border crime suggest deeper networks operating in rural Oyo. This outcome may encourage more public reporting, but it also exposes how armed groups exploit forested areas near state borders. For Nigerians in affected communities, the real test will be whether police can sustain pressure on the remaining suspects.
