Dr Alex Otti, the Abia State Governor, has taken a significant step to support the state's top-performing students. The governor announced that all first-class graduates from three convocation sets of the Abia State University, Uturu, will receive automatic scholarships to pursue their Master's and PhD programmes in any Nigerian university. This move is expected to boost academic excellence and provide opportunities for the students to further their education.
The governor made the announcement at the 30th-34th convocation ceremony of the institution, which was part of the activities marking the event. He also directed the Head of Service to identify immediate gaps in the civil service, which will be filled by 100 exceptional graduates from the three sets. This decision aims to inject fresh talent into the civil service and enhance its effectiveness.
Furthermore, Governor Otti approved N200m to support up to 100 graduates with innovative business ideas and enterprise initiatives. This move is expected to encourage entrepreneurship and provide opportunities for the graduates to start and scale their businesses.
Additionally, the governor announced the restoration of stable electricity to the University environment with the commissioning of a 5MVA power substation. This facility includes fault isolation provisions and will be powered initially by gas turbines, with plans to transition to renewable energy over time. The power project is designed to distribute electricity across the University campus through multiple sub-transformers, ensuring that once there is supply on the national grid, the entire University receives power.
The new power facility is expected to not only serve ABSU but also extend electricity to Uturu, other adjoining communities, and boost socio-economic activities in the area.
Governor Alex Otti's decision to grant automatic scholarships to first-class graduates from Abia State University is a significant step towards investing in the state's human capital. By filling gaps in the civil service with exceptional graduates and providing financial support for innovative business ideas, the governor is demonstrating a commitment to delivering dividends of democracy to the people. The restoration of stable electricity to the University environment is also a welcome development, as it will improve living conditions for students and enhance their learning environment. However, the lack of transparency in the allocation of the N200m for business support initiatives raises questions about the effectiveness of the programme. As the state continues to implement these initiatives, it is essential to ensure that they are well-coordinated and have a tangible impact on the lives of everyday Nigerians.
