The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has received assurances from its factional national chairman, Tanimu Turaki, that the party will feature prominently on the ballot in the 2027 general elections. Turaki made this promise during the 103rd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of his faction in Abuja. Despite lingering leadership challenges, Turaki expressed confidence that the party's leadership is working tirelessly to ensure PDP remains a viable platform for all aspirants.
Turaki noted that the party's leadership had intentionally delayed the meeting to analyse unfolding scenarios within and outside the party. He emphasized that as leaders, they are better positioned to inform party members of all developments, guiding them in taking informed decisions to save and strengthen the party. Turaki also addressed concerns about defections, stating that the exit of high-profile members will not lead to the party's collapse.
The Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman, Adolphus Wabara, urged party members to remain steadfast as the party awaits a formal report from a reconciliation committee headed by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State. Wabara described PDP members defecting to other parties as having weak belief, saying "he who laughs last laughs best."
The PDP's leadership crisis is far from over, but Tanimu Turaki's assurances are a welcome respite for party members. However, the party's viability on the ballot in 2027 will depend on its ability to address internal conflicts and maintain a united front. The party's reliance on a single leadership figure, Turaki, is a cause for concern, and the unilateral appointment of national officers by select individuals is a recipe for disaster. As the party looks to the future, it must prioritize transparency and inclusivity to prevent further defections and maintain its relevance in Nigerian politics. The party's ability to adapt and evolve will be crucial in its bid to regain power in 2027.
