The Nigerian Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has pledged full support to the Lagos State Government in implementing the Employees' Compensation Scheme (ECS) across the state. This follows Lagos's formal approval for the full rollout of the programme. NSITF Managing Director/Chief Executive Oluwaseun Falaye stated the agency is committed to helping build a strong institutional framework for the scheme's success. He made the commitment during a visit to the Lagos State governor, where both parties discussed modalities for effective collaboration. The ECS provides benefits to employees who suffer work-related injuries, disabilities, or death, ensuring timely medical and financial support. NSITF has been working with sub-national governments to expand coverage beyond the federal level. Lagos becomes one of the first states to move toward full domestication of the scheme.
Oluwaseun Falaye's push to align NSITF with Lagos on the ECS signals a shift toward decentralised social protection in Nigeria. With Lagos taking concrete steps to implement the scheme, other states may face pressure to follow or risk falling behind in worker welfare standards. This collaboration could set a precedent for how federal agencies partner with states on social insurance. For Nigerian workers, it may mean broader access to compensation—if execution matches the promise.
