The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has assumed responsibility for collecting mineral royalties from mining companies across the country, effective January 1, 2026. This shift follows the enactment of the Nigeria Tax Laws 2025, signed by President Bola Tinubu on June 26, 2025, which grants the NRS authority over all federally collectible revenues. The decision emerged from a meeting on April 2, 2026, in Abuja between Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake and NRS Chairman Dr Zacch Adedeji. A joint statement endorsed by both officials confirmed the transition, with the Ministry retaining a technical support role.
The Ministry will provide mineral pricing data, geological information, and industry coordination to aid the royalty process. According to NRS Special Adviser Dare Adekanmbi, the new framework aims to boost transparency and efficiency in revenue collection. Mining operators will be educated on the updated procedures through a nationwide sensitisation programme. Both institutions pledged close collaboration to ensure a smooth rollout without disruption to mining activities.
