Prof Charles Anosike, the Director General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), has received a prestigious mentorship award from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). The award was presented to him at the 2026 Student Mentorship summit, which took place at Merit House in Abuja. The event's theme was "Skybound Leadership: A Multi-Sector Approach to Youth Development in Tech, Aviation, Oil and Gas, Security and Anti-Drug/Cybercrime Advocacy".
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has been commended for its timely and accurate information dissemination on climate and weather, which has significantly contributed to the safety of lives and guided farmers in making informed decisions about their crops. As a result, crop yields have increased. Over 1 million university students have benefitted from President Bola Tinubu's students loan scheme, according to Prof Anosike. He described this as a historic milestone in the nation's educational development.
The partnership between NiMet and some universities has improved climate and weather monitoring, prediction, and reporting. The agency plans to sign agreements with more universities and institutions within and outside Nigeria to improve agriculture, air and sea travels, among other areas.
The recent mentorship award received by Prof Charles Anosike is a testament to the Director General's commitment to providing accurate and timely information to Nigerians. However, the award also highlights the importance of government initiatives such as the Nigerian Educational Loan Fund (NelFund), which has benefitted over 1 million students. President Tinubu's decision to introduce this scheme has undoubtedly eased the financial burden on parents and provided opportunities for indigent students to acquire university education. As the government continues to invest in education, it is crucial that it also addresses the challenges faced by students, including access to quality education and job opportunities after graduation. The partnership between NiMet and universities is a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done to ensure that Nigeria's youth are equipped with the necessary skills to compete in the global job market.
