The University of Abuja, now renamed Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, will confer an honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) degree on Yusuf Ali, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), during its combined 29th and 30th convocation ceremonies on Saturday, 18 April. The decision was approved by the University Governing Council at its 83rd extraordinary meeting, following a recommendation from the senate. The invitation, signed by Vice-Chancellor Hakeem Fawehinmi, extended the honour on behalf of the council, senate, management, staff and students.
Yusuf Ali is the founder and principal partner of Yusuf O. Ali & Co, Ghalib Chambers, a law firm established in 1994. He began his legal career at Adegboyega Awomolo & Co in 1983 and became a partner before setting up his own practice. He earned his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), in 1978, where he received the Federal Merit Award. He obtained his Master of Laws from OAU in 1991. Appointed Notary Public in 1989, Ali was named Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 1997.
Honouring Yusuf Ali with an honorary degree recognises a career built on consistency and professional excellence, not political alignment. The fact that the university, recently renamed after a former head of state, chose a legal practitioner with no known partisan ties speaks volumes. This signals that institutional recognition in academia may still value merit over patronage. For Nigerian graduates watching, it suggests that enduring contribution can earn acknowledgment, even in a system often swayed by connections.
