Nigerian national and one other arrested as detectives bust drug trafficking network in Kenya
**Breaking News:** Kenyan Police Nab Nigerian National and Local Associate in Multi-Million Naira Drug Trafficking Ring
In a major breakthrough in the fight against narcotics trafficking, the Kenyan police have arrested a Nigerian national and one of his local associates in a sting operation in Kenya. According to a statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, the suspects were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation aimed at disrupting a suspected narcotics trafficking network.
The operation, which involved detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) and officers from the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU), was sparked by credible intelligence that suggested a planned narcotics exchange was set to take place in Machakos County. However, upon arrival at the designated location, the team discovered that the planned meeting had been cancelled.
Using real-time information from undercover sources, the police redirected their operation to Ruaka in Kiambu County, where they conducted a search at a house within the Mbuti Apartment complex. The search yielded several exhibits, including pellets and packages of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs, digital weighing scales, mobile phones, foreign passports, and cash in both Kenyan and Nigerian currencies.
The two suspects, Okeke Ikechukwu, a Nigerian national, and Alex Opondo, a Kenyan national, were arrested during the operation and are currently being held at Ruaraka and Pangani Police Stations. The recovered exhibits are undergoing forensic analysis, and the suspects are expected to be arraigned in court today as investigations continue to unravel the wider trafficking network.
This operation is a significant blow to narcotics traffickers in East Africa and demonstrates the commitment of Kenyan authorities to combating transnational organised crime.
