NDLEA operatives have made a significant seizure of cocaine hidden in dried stockfish heads. The consignment, weighing 5.80 kilograms, was intercepted at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Thursday, March 19. The cocaine was concealed in three jumbo-sized bags found in the possession of a suspect, Akputa Dickson Ejike.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismantled a key syndicate involved in shipping illicit substances globally. The agency's spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, revealed that the syndicate's activities were uncovered through intelligence gathering. This led to a sting operation at the airport, where the cocaine consignment was recovered.
In a separate operation, NDLEA operatives intercepted two illicit shipments at a courier company in Lagos. One shipment from Cotonou, Benin Republic, contained 1.9 kilograms of methamphetamine concealed in automobile filters. The second parcel had 40 ampoules of Morphine Sulphate and nine ampoules of Fentanyl.
The NDLEA's recent successes are a testament to the agency's efforts to combat the illicit drug trade. The dismantling of the syndicate responsible for shipping cocaine to India is a significant blow to the global network. However, the fact that these substances were intended for export to other countries raises concerns about Nigeria's role in the international drug trade. The NDLEA must continue to work closely with international partners to disrupt these networks. As Nigerians, we must also be vigilant and report suspicious activities to the authorities to prevent the proliferation of illicit substances in our communities.
