The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on its members to prioritize the collective interest of the party over personal ambitions ahead of its National Convention scheduled for March 29 and 30 in Abuja. The party's National Caretaker Working Committee Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, made this appeal during the 107th National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja on Monday.
Chairman Mohammed emphasized that the national convention is a critical milestone that will shape the future direction of the party. He urged stakeholders to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects discipline, transparency, and respect for internal democratic processes. The chairman noted that the party's recent progress in stabilizing its structures and restoring confidence is a testament to collective resolve and adherence to due process.
The chairman also commended the successful conduct of ward, local government, state, and zonal congresses nationwide, describing them as largely peaceful and reflective of the party's democratic ideals. He praised the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for his efforts in stabilizing the party.
The party's Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mao Ohuabunwa, also commended the successful congresses and described the ongoing electronic membership registration as a major step forward.
The PDP's call for unity and collective interest above personal ambition is a welcome development, especially given the party's history of internal strife. However, it remains to be seen whether this appeal will translate into tangible actions on the ground. The party's reliance on Nyesom Wike's efforts to stabilize the party raises questions about the extent of his influence and the party's willingness to empower other stakeholders. The successful conduct of congresses and electronic membership registration are positive steps, but the party must do more to address the underlying issues that have plagued it in the past. As the party looks to the future, it must prioritize transparency, accountability, and inclusivity to regain the trust of Nigerians.
