Security measures have been heightened at the Federal High Court in Kaduna as Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, arrives for his arraignment by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The ICPC has been under pressure to either release or charge El-Rufai to court following his 48-hour detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). On Monday, the ICPC announced that it would be arraigning El-Rufai over alleged money laundering and conversion of public property.

El-Rufai is scheduled to be arraigned alongside one Joel Adoga, while a separate charge has been filed against him and one Amadu Sule at a Kaduna State High Court. The charges in the state case include abuse of office, fraud, intent to commit fraud, and conferring undue advantage.

Journalists have been barred from covering the proceedings, and security has been tightened within and outside the court.

The arraignment of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai by the ICPC raises questions about accountability in Nigeria's public sector. The ICPC's decision to charge El-Rufai with alleged money laundering and conversion of public property sends a strong message that no one is above the law. The former governor's detention and subsequent arraignment are a testament to the agency's commitment to upholding transparency and accountability. However, the secrecy surrounding the proceedings raises concerns about the lack of transparency in Nigeria's judicial system. As El-Rufai faces charges, it remains to be seen how this will impact his reputation and the public's perception of his tenure as governor.
