Bauchi Police Arrest Suspect Over Kidnapping and Murder of Four-Year-Old Boy
The Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 20-year-old suspect, Rabiu Safiyanu, in connection with a kidnapping incident that resulted in the death of a four-year-old boy. The suspect was apprehended by detectives attached to the 'C' Divisional Headquarters in Bauchi, led by the Divisional Police Officer.
The investigation into the case began after a report was made by Salisu Yunusa, a resident of Nasarawa Madina Quarters, who stated that his son, Yunusa Salisu, had gone missing on March 18. The father received a call from an unidentified number demanding a ransom of N500,000, out of which he paid N100,000, but the child was not released.
During interrogation, Rabiu Safiyanu reportedly confessed to abducting the child, strangling him, and dumping his body at Warinje Hills before making further ransom demands. The decomposing body of the victim was later recovered from a shallow grave, with visible marks of strangulation, and a rope suspected to have been used in committing the crime was found at the scene.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to take over the case for discreet investigation and prosecution of the culprit. He also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities in their communities to security agencies.
The arrest of Rabiu Safiyanu is a welcome development, but it raises questions about the effectiveness of the Bauchi State Police Command in preventing such crimes. The fact that the suspect was able to demand a ransom and even kill the child suggests a level of sophistication and planning that should have been anticipated. The Commissioner's directive to the State Criminal Investigation Department to take over the case is a step in the right direction, but it remains to be seen whether justice will be served in this case. The people of Bauchi deserve to know what measures are being taken to prevent such crimes and ensure the safety of their children.
