Four persons have died in a road crash that occurred on the Ijebu Ode–Ore Expressway in Ogun State. The incident happened at around 11 p.m. on Monday at the Ijebu-Imushin axis. Eyewitnesses report that a white Toyota Hiace bus collided with a blue MAN Diesel truck belonging to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc.
The spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps in Ogun State, Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, confirmed the incident in a statement. According to Odunsi-Oyewole, the crash occurred at 11:16 p.m. on Monday. The victims, two male adults and two female adults, sustained fatal injuries and were confirmed dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the crash was caused by speeding. The truck was being towed when the towing chain snapped, leaving the vehicle stationary on the road. The speeding Toyota Hiace bus subsequently rammed into the stationary truck, causing the fatal collision. Rescue operatives arrived at the scene within eight minutes of receiving the distress call.
The remains of the victims have been evacuated and deposited at the State Hospital mortuary in Ijebu Ode. Officers of the Nigeria Police Force from the Imushin Division have taken custody of the vehicles involved in the crash and commenced further investigation.
The tragic loss of four lives on the Ijebu Ode–Ore Expressway is a stark reminder of the need for stricter adherence to speed limits. Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Akinwunmi Fasakin, has urged motorists to take heed of this warning, particularly during night travel. The fact that the driver of the towing vehicle fled the scene is a disturbing trend that highlights the need for increased accountability on our roads. This incident is a wake-up call for the authorities to take decisive action to prevent such tragedies in the future. The economic burden of road crashes in Nigeria is substantial, with the country losing millions of naira annually due to accidents.
