A fatal road accident occurred on Monday at the Ijebu-Imushin axis of the Ijebu Ode-Ore expressway in Ogun. The accident involved a white Toyota Hiace bus and a blue MAN Diesel truck belonging to Julius Berger. The truck was being towed when the towing chain snapped, and the speeding Toyota bus subsequently rammed into it.
Eyewitnesses report that the driver of the towing vehicle fled the scene, leaving the truck behind. The Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun Sector Command, Odunsi Afolabi, confirmed the incident and attributed the cause of the crash to excessive speed by the bus driver.
Preliminary investigations indicate that all four individuals in the bus sustained fatal injuries and were confirmed dead at the scene. The FRSC rescue team arrived at the scene within eight minutes of being alerted. The corpses were evacuated and deposited at the State Hospital Mortuary, Ijebu Ode.
The Nigerian Police Force, Imushin Division, has taken custody of the vehicles and the case for further investigation. The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Akinwunmi Fasakin, has urged all motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits, especially during night travel, and to ensure towing equipment meets safety standards to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
The reckless disregard for speed limits is a recurring theme in Nigeria's roads, and it's alarming that such tragedies continue to occur. The Sector Commander's call for adherence to speed limits is a reminder that lives are lost every day due to preventable accidents. The towing chain snapping and the driver fleeing the scene are a clear indication of the lack of accountability in our roads. As Nigerians, we demand that our roads become safer, and that drivers and towing companies are held accountable for their actions. The economic implications of such accidents are enormous, and it's time for our leaders to take concrete steps to address this issue.
