Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has given taxpayers more time to file their individual annual tax returns. The deadline, initially set for April 1, 2026, has been extended to April 14, 2026, allowing individuals two extra weeks to complete and submit accurate tax returns.
Taxpayers are now required to submit their returns electronically through LIRS's eTax platform, as manual filing has been discontinued. This is a crucial step in ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of the tax filing process. Taxpayers are also reminded to verify their Tax Identification Number (TaxID) to avoid errors or delays during processing.
The tax filing requirement applies to everyone with taxable income, including employees, business owners, self-employed individuals, professionals, and those working in the informal sector. According to tax laws, individuals are expected to declare their total income for the previous year within the first 90 days of a new assessment year.
This extension is part of LIRS's efforts to give taxpayers more time to comply with the new tax laws and regulations. The agency has been working to modernize the country's tax framework and improve compliance nationwide.
LIRS has also extended the deadline for employers' annual returns from February 1 to February 7 earlier this year. The agency is undertaking significant reforms at the federal level, including the introduction of new laws such as the Nigerian Revenue Service Establishment Act and the Nigerian Tax Administration Act.
