Wike Clarifies Stance on Endorsements in Rivers State Politics
Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has denied endorsing any candidate for future political contests in Rivers State, citing the responsibility of party elders in making such decisions. The clarification came during a meeting with stakeholders from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at his residence in Abuja.
Wike expressed concern over personal ambitions driving divisions within the political fold, warning against rushing endorsements. He emphasized that the group's strength lies in unity and commitment, not financial influence, and that external forces are attempting to sow discord. The Minister also expressed disappointment with individuals who benefited from appointments facilitated by the group but later criticize its leadership.
Wike's comments come as reports of private endorsements for local offices have been circulating. However, he reiterated that his public and private positions remain consistent, and he has not endorsed any candidate for either the PDP or APC at the state level. The only endorsement recognized by the group is for President Bola Tinubu.
Wike's stance is seen as a move to maintain unity within the group and prevent divisions that could affect the outcome of future political contests.
When Wike says he has not endorsed anyone for Rivers State, that means he is prioritizing party unity over personal ambition – and that unity is crucial for the success of President Bola Tinubu's administration. By reiterating his commitment to Tinubu, Wike is effectively signaling that his loyalty lies with the President, not with individual candidates. This development has significant implications for the upcoming political contests in Rivers State, as it suggests that Wike's influence will be focused on maintaining a united front rather than backing specific candidates.
