The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially acknowledged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) led by Abdulrahman Mohammed.
Mohammed's faction of the PDP is backed by Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). INEC's website confirms Mohammed as the PDP National Chairman, as of Monday.
Other members of the NWC recognised by INEC include Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary, Ahmed Mohammed as National Treasurer, Daniel Woyengikuro as National Financial Secretary, and Kamaldeen Adeyemi Ajibade, SAN, as National Legal Adviser.
The PDP's recognition comes following a national convention at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, where over 2,000 delegates from the 36 states elected Mohammed and other NWC members.
Notable figures in attendance at the convention included ex-Senate President Bukola Saraki and former governors Ayodele Fayose, Okezie Ikpeazu, and Samuel Ortom.
The INEC's recognition of the Wike-backed PDP leadership is a significant development in the party's internal power struggle. The election of Abdulrahman Mohammed as National Chairman, despite opposition from another faction, underscores the influence wielded by Nyesom Wike in the party. This move raises questions about the stability of the PDP and its ability to present a united front ahead of future elections. As Nigerians, we must watch closely how this development affects the party's chances in the next polls. The implications of this power shift are far-reaching, and only time will tell how it impacts the country's political landscape.
