The Nigeria Correctional Service is facing critical reforms to strengthen its correctional system, according to a report by an independent panel. The current manual processes in correctional facilities nationwide contribute to delays, data inconsistencies, and limited accountability, a member of the panel, Dr. Ikechukwu Ezeugo, noted. He stressed that a centralised digital system could address these challenges and strengthen transparency within the facilities.
The chairman of the panel, Dr. Magdalene Ajana, also called for immediate improvements in the welfare and working conditions of correctional personnel. Better remuneration, improved working environments, and access to adequate resources would empower personnel to perform their duties more effectively, Ajana stated.
