**Peace Restored in Umuderim: Imo Government Intervenes in Community Feud**
Tension was building in Umuderim Autonomous Community, in the Ihitte Uboma Local Government Area of Imo State, over a long-standing dispute between rival factions vying for leadership positions in the area. The disagreement, which began after the death of the community's traditional ruler, had been simmering for months, causing anxiety among residents.
To avert a potentially volatile situation, the Imo State Government took swift action, sending its Special Adviser on Community Relations, Ernest Oziri, to intervene in the crisis. Oziri met with stakeholders from both sides to hear their grievances and resolve the issue amicably.
The dispute centered on the succession process to the positions of President-General and the traditional ruler. One faction claimed that the current President-General, Chief Geoffrey Iwuagwu, had overstayed his tenure and that no valid election had been conducted to legitimize his second term. The opposing group, however, insisted that an election was held after the burial of the late traditional ruler in 2024, which returned Iwuagwu to office.
To ensure a fair hearing, Oziri invited both factions to his office, where they presented their cases. Despite the differing accounts, Oziri's intervention helped to reduce tensions in the community. He directed both parties to maintain restraint and decorum, pending an investigation and legal determination of the matter.
The Imo State Government's proactive approach to resolving the conflict demonstrates its commitment to preserving peace and stabilizing communities in the state. As Oziri noted, the government is determined to prevent communal disputes from degenerating into crises, sustaining the stability for which Umuderim community is known.
However, the dispute over the traditional ruler's succession remains unresolved. The Imo State Government has shown its willingness to intervene and ensure that the leadership process is transparent and constitutional. As the situation unfolds, the community can expect the government to continue playing a neutral and mediatory role in resolving the dispute.
