The Nigerian Bar Association has condemned the recent killings in Jos, Plateau State, describing the attack on innocent residents as gruesome and unacceptable. The violence occurred on Palm Sunday, a day set aside for worship, reflection, and peace, which was turned into one of fear, bloodshed, and mourning. Afam Osigwe, the President of the association, stated that the recurring nature of such killings suggests a pattern of impunity where perpetrators continue to evade justice. This impunity sends a dangerous message that human life is expendable, Osigwe noted. The association warned that the continued failure to hold offenders accountable could erode public trust in government and weaken national unity.
The NBA called on security agencies to swiftly identify and prosecute those responsible for the Plateau attack. The association also urged the federal and state governments to strengthen security in vulnerable communities. Improved intelligence gathering and more proactive response strategies are needed to prevent further attacks, the NBA stated. Victims and their families deserve justice, support, and reassurance that their suffering will not be ignored.
The association extended condolences to the families of those killed and to the people of Plateau State. It reaffirmed its solidarity with all affected and maintained that every Nigerian has an inviolable right to life and security. The recurring attacks raise serious constitutional concerns, particularly regarding the protection of the right to life as guaranteed under the Constitution.
