Healthcare Crisis: Declare State Of Emergency, Convene Urgent Dialogue, PSN Urges Tinubu
**Healthcare on the Brink: PSN Urges Tinubu to Act**
As Nigeria grapples with the ever-growing challenges in its healthcare sector, the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) has sounded the alarm, calling for President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in the sector. The warning comes as the PSN Lagos State Branch held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Lagos, where the outgoing chairman, Babayemi Oyekunle, painted a dire picture of a healthcare system on the verge of collapse.
According to Oyekunle, years of neglect, policy failures, and professional marginalisation have taken a toll on the healthcare system, which is already fragile. He accused the Federal Ministry of Health of being lethargic in addressing the issues, including the unresolved disputes between physicians and non-physician health professionals such as pharmacists, nurses, and laboratory scientists.
At the heart of the crisis lies the dispute over the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS), which governs the remuneration of non-physician professionals. Oyekunle alleged that the Federal Ministry of Health has consistently refused to adjust CONHESS, despite repeated adjustments to the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), which applies to physicians.
This double standard, Oyekunle argued, is discriminatory and has led to a sense of disillusionment among non-physician health professionals. He cited instances where adjustments have been made to the CONMESS scale without job evaluation, yet the same cannot be said for CONHESS.
The PSN chairman called on President Tinubu to convene an urgent dialogue to address the crisis in the healthcare sector. We can't afford to wait any longer. The lives of Nigerians depend on it.
