El-Rufai’s detention legal, based on court order — ICPC
**El-Rufai's Detention is Legally Valid, ICPC Insists**
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has come out to clarify the situation surrounding the detention of former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai.
According to ICPC spokesperson, Okor Odey, El-Rufai's continued detention is based on a valid court order and not a new directive. This clarification comes after a court appearance on Tuesday where El-Rufai's lawyers sought to overturn a remand order issued on March 5. However, the court adjourned the case until March 31 for El-Rufai's legal team to respond to the commission's submissions.
The ICPC says that the initial remand order granted on February 19 had given the commission 14 days to detain and investigate El-Rufai over allegations of money laundering and abuse of office. When that order expired, the commission applied for an extension, which was approved by the court on March 5. El-Rufai's lawyers had earlier attempted to set aside the remand order on March 9, but that attempt was dismissed.
In a statement, the ICPC reaffirmed that El-Rufai remains in lawful custody under a valid court order. The commission emphasized that all actions taken so far have been in strict compliance with the law, including the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015.
The ICPC also urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information and to rely on official updates from the commission. This is a timely reminder, especially in the digital age where misinformation can spread quickly.
In Nigeria, the rule of law is a cornerstone of our democracy, and it's essential that we allow the courts to resolve disputes in a fair and impartial manner. The ICPC's commitment to due process and professionalism is commendable, and we hope that this case will be resolved soon, according to the law.
