The University of Jos has announced the resumption of its first semester examinations on April 13, following a deadly attack in Jos North. The exams were suspended after gunmen struck the Angwa Rukuba community on Sunday, resulting in deaths and severe injuries. Emmanuel Madugu, Deputy Registrar in charge of Information and Public Relations, confirmed the new date in a statement issued Friday in Jos. The university's management met on April 3 to assess security threats that had prompted the earlier suspension and decision to send students home for an extended Easter break. Exams originally scheduled for March 30 will now be the first to resume. Students have been directed to contact their faculty's examination timetable officer for details. Academic activities, including lectures, will restart on April 7. Madugu stated that the university has made sufficient security arrangements to protect staff and students.
Holding exams days after a lethal attack suggests a rush to project normalcy, not a commitment to student safety. Emmanuel Madugu's assurance of "adequate arrangements" rings hollow when the same management evacuated students just days earlier over life-threatening risks. If the university can pause exams for danger, it should not resume them before that danger is demonstrably gone. For students, this means academic pressure is now overriding genuine concern for their wellbeing.
