Four police officers and a hunter were killed during coordinated attacks by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP fighters on two police stations in Borno State on April 4, 2026. The first attack occurred at around 0100 hours at the Nganzai Divisional Police Headquarters in Nganzai Local Government Area, where insurgents used Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs) and other weapons to damage part of the station and partially burn an unserviceable Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC). A second attack followed at approximately 0240 hours at a Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF)/Hunters duty post near Mallam Fatori IDP Camp in Damasak, Mobbar Local Government Area.

Borno State Police Command spokesman Nahum Kenneth-Daso confirmed the incidents in a statement, naming the slain hunter as Atom Abua, aged 40. About twenty thatched houses and properties were destroyed during the Damasak attack. Police, military, CJTF members, and local hunters engaged the attackers in both locations, repelling the assaults and restoring order. Borno Commissioner of Police Naziru Abdulmajid praised the responding units for their swift action and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased officers. He urged the public to remain vigilant and provide credible intelligence to security agencies.

💡 NaijaBuzz Take

The loss of four officers in a single night underscores the persistent threat in areas previously thought to be stabilizing. With Nahum Kenneth-Daso confirming the use of RPGs and the targeting of both police and IDP camps, the capability of these insurgents remains undiminished. Nigerians in the northeast continue to live under the shadow of attacks despite repeated assurances of improved security. This incident suggests that current strategies may not be enough to deter well-coordinated assaults in remote regions.
