The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, used his Easter message to assure Nigerians that the country's security challenges would soon end. He delivered the speech at the Ikot Ekpene Field Major Convention of The Apostolic Church in Ikot Obong Edong, Akwa Ibom State, on Easter Sunday. Speaking through a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media/Communication, Anietie Ekong, Akpabio acknowledged the grief of families who have lost loved ones to violence in homes, places of worship, markets and farms. He expressed national solidarity with victims, saying, "We mourn with you, pray for you, and honour the memory of those whose lives have been cut short. Their sacrifices can never be forgotten."
Akpabio linked the Easter story to national hope, stating, "Just as the resurrection revealed the complete triumph of Christ, I firmly believe that soon Nigeria's story will also reach its full and victorious conclusion: 'Nigeria defeats insecurity, evil and fear.'" He urged unity, compassion and faith in God's deliverance. Apostle (Dr) E. O. Akpan, Field Superintendent of the Apostolic Church and host of the event, echoed the sentiment, saying church prayers would usher in peace and development.
Akpabio's Easter message frames insecurity as a temporary darkness soon to be lifted by divine and national resolve. His invocation of resurrection symbolism to project victory over crime does not address specific policies or timelines for security improvement. For Nigerians enduring daily threats, a spiritual promise from a political figure offers comfort but no concrete plan. Hope preached from a pulpit is not a security strategy.
