The Federal Government College Kano Old Students Association (FGCKOSA) has rejected the proposed concession of 30 hectares of the school's land to Pluck Global Company under a Public-Private Partnership land swap deal. The protest emerged as the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa'id Ahmad, laid the foundation for 18 new infrastructure projects and the renovation of 14 facilities at the college on Monday. These developments, valued at eight billion naira, include a students' hostel, corpers lodge, three-bedroom block of flats, skills acquisition centre, and a clinic. FGCKOSA National President, Shoyinka Shodunke, condemned the plan, stating it undermines the integrity of Unity Schools and represents a shift from education to commercial real estate. He emphasized that alumni have invested billions into the school and planned to raise ₦5 billion through a foundation launching in June 2026. The association urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to cancel the concession and protect federally owned schools.
The proposed land swap involving Federal Government College Kano sets a concerning precedent for the future of federally owned institutions. If educational land can be exchanged for private development, students in other Unity Schools may face similar threats to their campuses' integrity and long-term use.
