Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, has been returned to the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) after attending his mother's burial in Abuja.
The 62-year-old politician was granted compassionate leave on March 27, 2026, following the death of his mother in Cairo, and was temporarily released to attend the burial. Several prominent figures in the Nigerian political landscape were in attendance at the funeral. El-Rufai was re-arraigned upon his return to ICPC custody and appeared before the Kaduna State High Court in connection with a separate ICPC charge. However, the case could not proceed due to the absence of a co-defendant, leading to an adjournment until April 10, 2026. The hearing of his bail application, initially scheduled for March 31, 2026, took place at the Federal High Court in Kaduna.
El-Rufai's return to ICPC custody marks the continuation of proceedings in the cases against him.
