Industrie Africa, a prominent online fashion retail platform, has ceased operations after five years of promoting African designers globally. The company, which launched in 2019, built a reputation for connecting international buyers with high-end African fashion brands. Instead of continuing as a retailer, it will relaunch as Industrie Africa Plus (IA+), an advisory firm focused on expanding African fashion into physical spaces. IA+ will partner with luxury hotels, cultural institutions and premium retail hubs to create concept stores and retail activations across the continent and abroad. Co-founder Maureen Orth said, "We've learned that physical experiences are essential to building deeper connections with African fashion." The new model will focus on curating immersive brand experiences rather than direct sales. No layoffs were announced, though the company did not disclose how many employees would transition to the new venture.
Shutting down a once-prominent e-commerce platform signals that digital retail alone may not yet be sustainable for African fashion, even for market leaders. Maureen Orth's pivot to physical activations with IA+ suggests that consumer engagement still hinges on tangible, experiential touchpoints. For Nigerian designers, this shift implies that visibility in luxury spaces may now matter more than online presence. If success depends on partnerships with hotels and cultural venues, access will likely favour those already connected to elite networks.
