ADC dislodges PDP in Senate as Tambuwal, Kingibe, 7 others defect
**ADC Takes Center Stage as Opposition Party in Senate, 9 Senators Defect**
The Senate has witnessed a significant shift in allegiance as nine senators from different parties have joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC). This development has catapulted the ADC to become the main opposition party in the Senate, pushing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to second place.
The nine senators, comprising six from the PDP, two from the Labour Party (LP), and one from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), made their move during the plenary session on Thursday. Their decision to leave their respective parties was prompted by internal crises, leadership disputes, and a desire to strengthen democracy.
The defectors include notable senators such as Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Sokoto South), Ireti Kingibe (FCT), Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South), and Tony Nwoye (Anambra North). Another notable figure, Senator Kamoru Olalere (Osun West), defected to the Accord Party, while Senator Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa West) made his defection to the Nigeria Democratic Party (NDC) official.
The impact of these defections is evident, with the ADC now having nine senators, while the PDP has lost its status as the main opposition party, now having only seven senators. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) still maintains its stronghold, with 87 senators.
According to political analysts, this realignment in the Senate is a significant development, especially considering the PDP's previous status as the main opposition party. The ADC's rise to prominence is expected to have far-reaching implications for the party's chances in future elections.
