Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Chioma Otti, has expressed gratitude to former Minister of Power and Chairman of Geometric Power Limited, Prof. Barth Nnaji, for his contributions to improving electricity supply in Aba and its surrounding areas.
Otti made this commendation at a pre-convocation lecture held at Abia State University (ABSU), where he was represented by his Special Adviser on Tertiary Education, Dr Emeka Enyeazu. The Governor highlighted the improvements in power supply across Aba and its environs, crediting Prof. Nnaji's efforts for the positive change.
Prof. Nnaji, in his lecture titled "Achieving Energy Sufficiency in Nigeria: Strategies, Priorities, and Timelines," painted a grim picture of Nigeria's power sector crisis. He revealed that the country requires 100,000 megawatts (MW) to meet its developmental objectives, yet it currently produces only 4,000 - 5,000 MW from an installed capacity of about 13,000 MW.
Prof. Nnaji proposed several practical solutions to address the crisis, including the restoration of Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), accelerated development of gas and power infrastructure, and the implementation of a Super Grid system to ensure reliable electricity transmission across the country.
The partnership between Abia State and Geometric Power Limited offers a glimmer of hope for Nigerians who have long suffered from the country's crippling power crisis. Governor Otti's recognition of Prof. Nnaji's efforts is a testament to the impact of public-private partnerships in addressing critical national issues. However, the fact remains that Nigeria still produces only a fraction of the electricity it needs to meet its developmental objectives. This raises questions about the effectiveness of the current power sector reforms and the need for more urgent and sustainable solutions. The "Catch Them Young" programme, launched by Prof. Nnaji, is a step in the right direction, but it is only one part of a much larger puzzle.
