A pivotal moment occurred in August 1985, when General Ibrahim Babangida, then Chief of Army Staff, took power from President Muhammadu Buhari. This shift marked the beginning of a new era, one in which the government sought to crush opposition and silence critics. The Babangida regime employed a combination of force, propaganda, and targeted intimidation to silence the press, labour unions, and students. Politicians who dared to oppose the regime faced severe consequences. However, a few professions remained steadfast in their opposition: doctors and lawyers. In a surprising move, General Babangida tried to co-opt these professions to legitimize his rule. He appointed Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, a respected pediatrician, as his Health Minister. Ransome-Kuti, a member of the influential Kuti family, had a strong track record of activism. His brother, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, was a legendary musician who spoke truth to power. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) was a beacon of hope for those who opposed the regime. Led by Bola Ajibola, the association strongly condemned the Buhari regime's use of military tribunals to try civilians. Ajibola, a respected Egba leader, embodied the values of justice and fairness. However, not all lawyers within the NBA shared Ajibola's views. Chief Gani Fawehinmi, a former national Public Secretary, took a different stance. He supported the Buhari regime's efforts to tackle corruption, even if it meant using radical measures. Fawehinmi believed that drastic action was needed to correct the country's political trajectory. This internal conflict within the NBA highlights the complexities of our past. As Nigerians, we often find ourselves at odds over the best way to address our challenges. The NBA's experience reminds us that even in the darkest of times, there are still those who stand up for what is right, even if it means going against the tide. As we reflect on our past, we are reminded of the importance of standing up for justice, even in the face of adversity. The Nigerian Bar Association's story serves as a powerful reminder of the role that institutions, like the NBA, can play in shaping our country's future. In today's Nigeria, where the rule of law is still a work in progress, the NBA's history offers valuable lessons. As the association continues to navigate the challenges of our time, we must remember the sacrifices made by our forebears who fought for justice and fairness.
