Senator Seriake Dickson, former Governor of Bayelsa State and National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has welcomed defectors from the All Progressives Congress (APC), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and other parties into the NDC. The defections occurred at a political event in Yenagoa on May 18, 2024, where Dickson formally inducted the new members. Among those who joined were former APC local government chairman in Southern Ijaw, Comrade Gift Godwin, and ex-ADC Bayelsa State Chairman, Chief Davies Ebiakpo. Dickson described the influx as a sign of growing confidence in the NDC's vision. He warned that Nigeria risks sliding into a one-party state if stronger opposition parties are not allowed to thrive.

"We are not here to mock democracy but to strengthen it," Dickson said. "The concentration of power in one party is dangerous for any nation." He urged political actors to embrace pluralism and ensure a competitive democratic space.

A former governor now leading a minor party is pulling in defectors from larger political camps, and that shift speaks more to the fragility of Nigeria's party loyalty than to the strength of the NDC. Dickson's warning about a one-party state gains weight when parties lose members so publicly without consequences. If defections continue with no policy disagreements aired, voters may conclude that party affiliations are about personal advantage, not public service. This reshuffling does little for democratic depth unless it brings new ideas into the political arena.
