Wema Bank won two awards at the Global SME Banking Innovation Awards 2026, held on March 12, 2026. The bank was named SME Financier of the Year and received the Best SME Lending Product – Digital Bank award. The recognition highlights its efforts in expanding financial access for small and medium-sized enterprises through innovation and digital solutions.

The Best SME Lending Product award was attributed to Wema Bank's MSME Instant Loan, a fully digital, collateral-free lending platform that enables eligible entrepreneurs to receive prequalification and disbursement within minutes. The bank's ALAT ecosystem supports SMEs with digital banking tools, payment platforms, advisory services, and capacity-building initiatives.

SARA by Wema, a women-focused programme, also forms part of the bank's targeted support for female entrepreneurs. Managing Director Moruf Oseni stated that SMEs are central to Nigeria's economic growth, driving innovation and job creation. He emphasized the bank's deliberate push to build an ecosystem that goes beyond traditional banking. Executive Director Tunde Mabawonku noted that technology-driven models are dismantling long-standing credit barriers.

Wema Bank, with over 80 years of operation, reaffirmed its commitment to SME development through innovation and partnerships.

💡 NaijaBuzz Take

Winning global awards is not the same as transforming local lending realities. Moruf Oseni's vision of a seamless digital ecosystem means little to the small trader in Aba who still navigates power failures, poor connectivity, and loan eligibility walls. Recognition from London or Dubai does not shorten the distance between a struggling business owner and the next disbursement. For most Nigerian SMEs, the real test remains access — not accolades.
