US to designate Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as terrorist organisation
**US Moves to Label Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as Terrorist Group**
The United States government has announced plans to designate the Sudanese chapter of the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation. This decision is expected to take effect on March 16, 2026, after which the group will be included in the list of Foreign Terrorist Organisations.
The US Department of State made this announcement in a statement signed by US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. According to Rubio, the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood has been involved in violent activities against civilians in the ongoing conflict in Sudan. The group's fighters, he alleged, have received training and support from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a powerful military organisation known for its extremist activities.
The statement also mentioned that the group's al-Baraa Bin Malik Brigade was previously sanctioned by the US government for its role in Sudan's brutal war. This latest move by the US is aimed at depriving the Iranian regime and the Muslim Brotherhood chapters of resources to engage in or support terrorism.
The Muslim Brotherhood is a global Islamist organisation with chapters in several countries, including Sudan. While it has been involved in politics and social activities in some of these countries, its Sudanese chapter has been accused of using violence to undermine efforts to resolve the conflict in Sudan.
This development comes at a time when Nigeria is dealing with its own terrorism challenges, including the activities of Boko Haram and other extremist groups. The US move is seen as a significant effort to combat terrorism globally, and it may have implications for Nigeria and other countries in the region.
