The University of Lagos has finally lifted its 10-year suspension of student unionism, restoring the Students' Union Executive Council. The decision comes after the university's Senate lifted the ban following the successful conduct of elections to fill key positions. The reinstatement marks a significant milestone in the institution's governance and student engagement framework.
The swearing-in ceremony, presided over by Vice-Chancellor Prof Folasade Ogunsola, took place at the Tayo Aderinokun Hall, Akoka. The newly elected executives, including Bolaji Akinpelu as Students' Union President, were administered the Oath of Office by a legal practitioner, Risqiat Usman. The Vice-Chancellor urged the new leadership to regard their positions as a call to service to both students and the wider university community.
The suspension of the Students' Union in 2016 was a result of violent protests that disrupted academic activities and resulted in damage to university property. However, the university has expressed confidence that the new leadership will uphold the values of discipline, dialogue, and constructive engagement in advancing students' interests.
The ceremony also featured the presentation of the Staff of Office to the Students' Union President, Bolaji Akinpelu. Other Students' Union executives inaugurated include the Vice-President, Apalomo Sunday; General Secretary, Solomon Daniel; and President of the Institute of Continuing Education, Oreoluwa Abraham.
The reinstatement of student unionism is a crucial step towards restoring student autonomy and representation at the University of Lagos.
The reinstatement of student unionism at the University of Lagos is a significant victory for students who have been advocating for their rights for over a decade. The new leadership, led by Bolaji Akinpelu, must now work to address the welfare concerns that led to the suspension of the Students' Union in the first place. The university's management must also ensure that the newly elected executives are given the necessary support and resources to carry out their duties effectively. This move is a crucial step towards restoring student autonomy and representation at the institution. The university's decision to reinstate student unionism sends a strong message that student voices matter and that their concerns will be taken seriously.
