Criminals are using online platforms to radicalise people and fund terrorism, a major threat to Nigeria's stability, economic systems, national security, and democratic institutions.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has sounded the alarm on the growing menace of money laundering and terrorism financing. According to the agency, the advent of the internet, social media, and artificial intelligence has drastically altered the financial crime landscape.
The ICPC chairman, Musa Aliyu, pointed out that criminals can now launder proceeds of crimes across jurisdictions with ease, thanks to digital technologies. He noted that the speed and anonymity of online transactions have made detection more challenging, while the stakes have become considerably higher.
The ICPC chairman commended the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) for its deployment of advanced analytics, artificial intelligence, and real-time transaction monitoring systems to detect suspicious financial flows with greater precision and speed.
Illicit financial flows often fuel organised crime, corruption, trafficking networks, and violent extremism, according to the NFIU's chief executive officer, Hafsat Bakari.
The media has a crucial role to play in exposing money laundering and countering terrorism financing, as urged by GIABA's country director, Timothy Melaye.
The ICPC's warning on the threat of money laundering and terrorism financing should serve as a wake-up call for the Nigerian government to take concrete steps to address this menace. The NFIU's efforts to deploy advanced technologies to detect suspicious transactions are a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done to anticipate and prevent these crimes. Everyday Nigerians will bear the brunt of inaction, and it is the responsibility of the government to ensure that our economic systems and national security are protected. The media must play its part in exposing money laundering and countering terrorism financing, but the government must also provide the necessary support and resources to make this a reality.
