The University of Lagos (UNILAG) hosted the national launch of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) UniPod on Tuesday as part of the UNDP's Africa Timbuktoo Initiative. The event marked the start of a hub designed to drive youth-led technology development and entrepreneurship in partnership with the Federal Government, UNDP, and UNILAG. Speaking for Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senator Ibrahim Hadejia described the initiative as a shift toward university-led innovation for national development. UNILAG Vice-Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola called it a transformative milestone, noting the university's existing AI research and startup incubation programs. UNDP Resident Representative Elsie Attafuah emphasized the programme's aim to link academic innovation with market opportunities and economic inclusion. The launch was attended by government officials including Lagos State's Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology Olatunbosun Alake, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani, and the Minister of State for Education representing the Minister of Education.
The AI UniPod at UNILAG signals a direct pathway for Nigerian students to access structured AI training and startup support. This could narrow the gap between campus innovation and industry-ready solutions, potentially turning UNILAG's research into local job creators.
