Ukraine to test French-Italian alternative to US Patriot missiles
**Ukraine to Test French-Italian Air Defence System as Alternative to US Patriot Missiles**
In the midst of the ongoing war in Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced plans to test a new generation of French-Italian air defence system, SAMP/T, as a European alternative to the US-made Patriot missiles currently in use. The move is seen as a strategic step towards reducing Ukraine's reliance on US military aid, which has been a topic of discussion in recent times.
According to Zelensky, the SAMP/T system, developed by the Franco-Italian consortium Eurosam, is the only European alternative to the Patriot missiles, which have been used by Ukraine to defend against Russian missile attacks. The system is expected to be delivered to Ukraine this year, with the first batch to be tested specifically against ballistic missiles.
The decision to pursue the SAMP/T system comes as a result of a deal signed between Ukraine and France in November 2025. Under the agreement, Ukraine is set to purchase 100 Rafale F4 aircraft from France by 2035, as well as SAMP/T air defence systems, air defence radars, air-to-air missiles, and aerial bombs. The deal also includes provisions for technology transfer and joint production of drones and other military equipment in Ukraine.
The SAMP/T system has been touted as a significantly more effective alternative to the Patriot missiles, with the ability to hit targets at ranges of up to 200 km and altitudes of over 30 km. This would provide Ukraine with a vital layer of protection against Russian missile attacks, which have been a major concern for the country's military.
The move is also seen as a way for Ukraine to diversify its military aid and reduce its reliance on US support, which has been uncertain in recent times. By pursuing a European alternative, Ukraine is taking a proactive step towards securing its national security interests and ensuring its military preparedness for the ongoing conflict.
As the war in Ukraine continues to unfold, the test of the SAMP/T system will be closely watched by military analysts and observers. The outcome of the test could have significant implications for Ukraine's military strategy and its relations with European allies.
